Editing 16_00.con for ScConv Compatibility. The 16_00.con file shipped in Build 38 is not compatible with the ScConv DOS interactive and batch conversion program. To convert between Chinese 16:GuoBiao (simplified) characters and Smart Characters 0:Combined requires the concordance file that concords these two symbol sets. Instead, Build 38 16_00.con concords between 16:GuoBiao and 7:SimpleComb, which is identical to 0:Combined, but which ScConv does not recognize as identical. The build 39 version of 16_00.con (dated 8/26/96) concords to 0:Combined, and is compatible with both systems. You can obtain and install the Build 39 concordance file 16_00.con by downloading from the web site at http://www.aproposinc.com/files/16_00.zip but since the change to 16_00.con is minor, you can easily edit the Build 38 16_00.con file to be compatible. You will need a text editor capable of editing large files (NotePad won't do). Computers that have DOS also have a text editor called Edit that works fine. You can use another. The following directions are for using DOS Edit: 1) Open a DOS box, and change directory to c:\sc\system (or your \Sc\System). 2) Type "Edit 16_00.con" and press Enter to launch DOS Edit and open the file "16_00.con." 3) Observe the first line. Press the End key to scroll to the end of the line. Note the double arrows. Take care to not delete these arrows (if you do, you can get them back by pressing Ctrl+] (right bracket)). Look for the last block which reads: n1/s=7/h=16/c=sc/n=SimpCombMing 4) Change the '7' to a '0' and "SimpCombMing" to "CombinedMing": n1/s=0/h=16/c=sc/n=CombinedMing 5) Select File | Exit then Yes to save the file. That's it. But for best results, download and install the update to the ScConv conversion program at: http://www.aproposinc.com/files/scconv87.zip Obtaining Build 39 16_00.con ============================ You can obtain and install the Build 39 concordance file 16_00.con by downloading from the web site. 1) Enter "http://www.aproposinc.com/files/16_00.zip" into the location control on your browser. 2) Save the zip file in a temporary directory. 3) Unzip into the \sc\system directory. It is not encrypted. Using unzip, open a DOS box, change to the temporary directory, and enter: c:\sc\unzip 16_00.zip c:\sc\system to extract the file and copy it to your \sc\system directory. More Information ================ Concordance files are used by Smart Characters for Windows to perform on-the-fly display using native fonts, and by ScConv to convert text documents. The GB->SC concordance is contained in the file 16_00.con. Prior to Smart Characters for Windows Build 38, 16_00.con contained several hundred concordance errors in the GB Level II range. Smart Characters for Windows Build 38 added several new characters to the 0:Combined and 7:SimpleComb symbol set, unified two characters, and updated all of the Japanese and Chinese concordance files, fixing the incorrect concordances in 16_00.con in the process while adding hundreds of new concordances. We expect further developments in the future as new characters are added to the 0:Combined symbol set family. Prior to Build 39, ScConv was unstable with the incorrect version of 16_00.con, sometimes locking up the computer, and requiring a hard reset. ScConv has been updated to eliminate this unsuitability, but it still requires a correct 16_00.con file to work correctly. end.
